Make your room in the accommodation your favourite place to stay

If you have already made the decision to live in a student accommodation, you will know that you will be allocated a room just for you. Sometimes the appearance of the room can be a bit neutral and you may want to give it a personal touch to make it your new little home and your favourite place.

Knowing the terms of the lease, you will already know that you cannot paint the walls. It is the management’s responsibility to give you a room with well-painted walls. Also, making unauthorised alterations can result in consequences such as a percentage of your deposit being withheld to restore the condition of the room.

To avoid inconvenience, there are several ways to personalise your room without remodeling or affecting the appearance of the room you were given. If you want to make the room in your accommodation more fun and personal, we recommend:

Decorate with your favourite photos

On the note board in your room, decorate it with some of your favourite photos. It can be photos with your friends from university or photos with family members that remind you of home. It could be pictures of your hometown, your pet, your parents, siblings or cousins. Photographs are a nice way to remember your loved ones and feel more ownership of your own space.

We recommend tacking the photos to the note board in your room. To make them more eye-catching and interesting, you can print them in different sizes or even in black and white. Another option is to stick them to the wall with a special adhesive that won’t damage the paint.

This simple modification gives a special and very personal touch to any student room.

Arrange your spaces as you like

When you arrive at your student accommodation, you will be greeted with an empty room with shelves and wardrobes to store your belongings. Instead of just filling empty spaces, think about putting small decorations on the shelves to give them your personal touch.

If you need more storage space, you could invest in your own folding hanging wardrobe and it can have any look you want. You’ll be able to use your space wisely and decorate a little at the same time.

You can also add your own desk accessories to tidy away pencils, markers and notes. Try to make sure that all the items you include have a similar look or style. This way, you will be able to decorate your room with intentionality and coherence.

Illuminate with LED lights

Nowadays, LED strip lights are very popular for decorating student rooms. The brightness and illumination provided by these fixtures gives a nice look to the rooms. They come in different colours and lengths, so you can choose the one you like best to personalise your spaces.

These bulbs are versatile, so you have the option of hanging them on the wall or around the cork board with your notes and photos. If you go for this little decoration, you’ll see that your room will take on a more creative and beautiful look.

Just remember that in order not to damage the paint on the walls, you should always use a special adhesive. If you use regular adhesive, you might lift the paint layer when you remove it and then you will be charged for the damage.

Show off your own creations

If you have ever practised painting, clay or any kind of DIY, include some of your pieces in your room decoration. You can place them on your bookshelf, desk or cork board.

This is also a great way to add a personal touch to your room. For sure, when you open the door after school, you’ll feel like the space is more yours than before.

Buy art

If you’re not a very creative person and DIY isn’t your thing, there are plenty of inexpensive art alternatives. You can decorate with postcards, print interesting artistic images or make your own poster collection.

As long as they are works that express your personality and your way of being, they will be good options to personalise your room. Remember that the aim of these subtle changes is to take the space from looking neutral and make it more like your own little personalised home.

As a final recommendation, don’t forget that less is more. Personalising your room is a good idea to make it more pleasant and comfortable for you, but avoid adding more things than necessary. Otherwise, you run the risk of having a cluttered and overloaded bedroom.
